Wooden windows: everything you need to know

Find out more about wooden windows – are they worth buying? What are the types of wooden windows? Are they warm enough?

Wooden windows: everything you need to know

Wooden window joinery unnecessarily causes controversy. Keeping in mind the old windows which we desperately replaced with plastic ones, we consider wood to be a bad material for window production. By contrast, modern wooden windows are associated with high expense.

What are wooden windows actually like? Are they worth the money?

Read our article and contact us if you are considering buying wooden windows but still have doubts.

Are wooden windows good?

Wooden windows are warm.

Wooden windows are warm. We are often afraid of wooden windows as we remember the old days. But nowadays, wooden windows are a symbol of luxury and prestige. Wood is naturally a good insulator and wood window profiles do not need chambers like plastic windows. Solid wood window profiles are therefore warm enough. In addition, there are even wooden window systems designed for energy-efficient homes! The thermal insulation can be significantly increased by adding appropriate glazing and a warm spacer. The heat transfer coefficient of wooden windows with an aluminium cover from Okno-Pol reaches up to 0.64 W/m2K.

Upkeep and maintenance

Wooden windows connote a great deal of work associated with regular maintenance, painting, varnishing, and other treatments. The truth is that well-made wooden windows are very easy to use. The extra effort used in their manufacture translates into their appearance and durability. They will perform best if they undergo regular maintenance, but it is not very demanding.

Okno-Pol’s wooden windows are manufactured from suitably prepared timber and glued from layers of wood with alternating grain pattern, making them durable and resistant to weather conditions, such as temperature and moisture. The windows are brilliantly impregnated and varnished so the care is easy and pleasant and we can enjoy the “newness” effect for a very long time.

Windows that are naturally good

Investing in warm windows reduces your carbon footprint and does the environment a favour. In addition, by choosing wooden windows, you are using a natural material that is recyclable (as is the glass in the panes) and, of course, biodegradable.

What are the types of wooden windows?

The wood used for window joinery has a major impact on the aesthetic appearance and performance of the final product. You can choose domestic materials, such as oak or larch, or invest in windows made from exotic woods, such as meranti.

Types of wood

1. Meranti
It is one of the most prized wood species. It has an exceptionally distinctive grain pattern, which gives it originality. Meranti wood is durable and highly resistant to water and temperature extremes. In addition, meranti windows have excellent insulation properties – both thermal and acoustic.

2. Pine
It has a light warm colour, which is perfect for rustic and more austere interior designs. It has been used for years in the manufacture of joinery because of the ease of processing and durability. Pine wooden windows have excellent sound and thermal insulation and high weather resistance.

3. Oak
It is perceived as one of the better materials for wood joinery components. It impresses with its strength, weight, and durability. An additional advantage is its longevity and resistance to abrasion. It provides exceptional thermal and acoustic protection. The unique grain pattern is undoubtedly an additional advantage of oak, and windows made of it also perfectly match oak furniture.

4. Larch
Larch wood is a hard and fairly heavy material with remarkable durability. It is characterised by its high resistance to adverse weather conditions. It has very good physical and mechanical properties. Its elegant design will work well in modern and classic style interiors.

5. Spruce
This species of wood is light and flexible and, at the same time, strong and durable. Spruce wood has a high resistance to moisture and biological corrosion. It is perfectly suited for use in wooden and aluminium joinery. Spruce, thanks to its properties, enjoys a considerable recognition.

Colours

Natural wood, azure

If you want windows with a visible wood structure, azure paints can be used instead of varnishes. These are special coatings that protect the wood while leaving the grain and structure elements visible.

Varnishing

Wooden windows, like plastic windows, can be successfully varnished in any RAL colour. As a result, they adapt to the interior, regardless of the style in which it has been designed.

  Wooden windows with aluminium cover

As with plastic windows, you can use aluminium covers in wooden windows to increase their durability and protect them against heat, cold or moisture. Our wooden windows can be matched to the facade thanks to the possibility of painting the cladding in any colour. If you are interested in energy-efficient windows, you can use a cladding with an additional layer of insulation.

Wooden windows: for modern interiors or old buildings?

Modern wooden windows

Wooden windows are suitable not only in rustic interiors. They can fit very well in very contemporary buildings and modern barn houses.

Retro wooden windows

Wooden windows are naturally suited to the renovation of old and historic buildings and to the styling of new ones if you want to achieve classic elegance. Okno-Pol achieves this effect by using, among others, the following components in wood window joinery:

  • trims, handles and covers

  • decorative glazing beads

  • external milling of the sash for decoration

  • decorative slamming strips, trims and ornaments

  • decorative masking strips

  • decorative transom bars

  • mullions

Wooden windows – parameter

Which is better: wooden or plastic windows?

Wooden windows and PVC windows are two completely different products so it is impossible to say definitively which is better. Both have their target groups.

The price of wooden windows is incomparably higher than that of PVC windows, but the design of timber windows is inimitable. Both can serve users for many years, especially if they are made of high-quality (artificial or natural) materials; they can also achieve favourable thermal insulation or acoustic performance. However, the production of wooden windows requires more precision and is more time-consuming compared to plastic windows, which also affects the price.

Wooden windows are more often chosen by informed customers who are knowledgeable about joinery, appreciate the advantages of wood, and plan to achieve a specific effect. Wooden frames achieve a unique visual effect and target users will not be willing to choose other products at a lower price as this is usually not about the price.

Plastic windows are the first choice for those who want to fit out their home with window joinery at a low cost and do not care about a particular effect. They are better suited to modern, less classic interiors or in parts of the house that are less visible. Customers often invest in aluminium or wooden windows for most parts of the house and choose PVC for the basement or garage, for example.

Wooden doors

If you decide to buy wooden windows, it seems natural to choose a front door of the same material. In addition to the design and warm atmosphere at home, wooden doors can be very sturdy.

Okno-Pol wooden doors have a low threshold with thermal break as standard. They can also be fitted with a door closer, electric door strikes, peepholes, letterboxes, and intelligent access systems. Wooden doors can be made of solid wood or wood with an aluminium cover (like windows) or use a door panel for the design customisation.

Wooden patio doors

HS sliding systems and wooden accordion systems are also very popular. You can match the patio doors to the window joinery, without compromising on the parameters and solutions available on the market: lift-and-slide, tilt-and-slide, and fold-and-slide (accordion). Customers also often choose wooden sliding systems with an aluminium cover. If varnished with a suitable colour, the cladding can perfectly match the look of the patio or garden and provide even greater comfort for householders.

Most companies specialising in timber windows also have doors and sliding systems on offer so you can easily equip yourself with the whole set. You should also check if the company offers mosquito nets, blinds and shutters. If you purchase all products at the same time, you will save time and money.
